This week’s clip from the skip is the end of the GADAFI tape from 2002 and sees our comedy activist regaling tourists with his rendition of the balcony scene from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Quite lovely really and he still manages to get his message across about the brutal redevelopment of Spitalfields Market
In this scorching clip comedian Russell Brand dons the disguise of the Elephant Man to expose the corporate cancer eating away at the heart of our society. He confronts legal firm Allen & Overy and then stages a street protest outside Spitalfields Market, East London. The use of comedy, politics, direct action and silly costumes makes me think of the Situationist-inspired German activists, Hamburg for Free and Dresden for Free who dressed as Superheroes and raided expensive restaurants to put the wind up the seriously rich.
I think this clip is from late (Dec) 2002 and last time I looked Spitalfields Market had been turned into a soulless shopping centre for City dealers to spend the cash they’ve stolen from the 3rd World. Good try though Russell, more comedy direct action!
In this week’s clip from the Shoeburyness skip Russell goes out onto the streets of Spitalfields, East London to demonstrate how corporations are destroying community spirit. This is a real rare gem, the tape box is dated December 02 – before Brand was a household name. Here he comes across like a lithe humorous Naomi Klein, using comedy to reveal the soulness nature of the corporatisation of our community spaces. In a sane world this would be a free DVD given away with every copy of ‘No Logo’ and Monbiot’s ‘Age of Consent’.
Russell Brand as Elephant Man in Liverpool Street Stunt
I had one of the most illumating finds of my skip-diving career not long ago in a quiet suburban Essex street. It was a bag of video tapes that I assumed would be old rubbish. Turns out to be some great early work by the comedian Russell Brand.
To make it a bit more interesting I’m going to post a new video every Tuesday – for as long as I can get away with it….
